There many reasons why someone may not feel safe, happy, or healthy in their neighborhood. While the Healthy Neighborhoods Project is not a a direct service agency, we’d like to share some information about resources and organizations that may be of use to you as a community member, resident, parent, spouse, caregiver, or youth.

Family Justice Center of New Orleans

The Family Justice Center of New Orleans is a community partnership that cares for families in need. It strives to end family violence, child abuse, sexual assault, and stalking through prevention, empowerment, and client-centered services. It offers an anti-stalking program, transitional housing, education and employment, individual and group counseling. 

New Orleans Job Corps Center

Job Corps is a free education and career-training program for people ages 16 to 24. We support the Job Corp’s mission of teaching eligible young people the skills they need to become employable and independent and placing them in meaningful jobs for further education. They offer a GED/High School Diploma Program, Carpentry, Clinical Certified Medical Assistant, Culinary Arts, Electrical, Health Occupations Technology, and Medical Office Support Training. They also offer, free meals, transportation assistance, basic dental, medical, and optometrist services, are provided to eligible students.

YMCA of Greater New Orleans

The YMCA of Greater New Orleans makes accessible the support and opportunities that empower people and communities to learn, grow and thrive. The Y offers Education and Leadership classes, swimming and sports, book clubs for children and adults and adult literacy classes.

The Family Independence Temporary Assistance Program (FITAP)

FITAP provides cash assistance to families with children when the financial resources of the family are insufficient to meet subsistence needs.  The goal of FITAP is to decrease the long-term dependency on welfare assistance by promoting job preparation and work. It’s Strategies to Empower People (STEP) Program: provides opportunities for work-eligible families of FITAP to receive job training, employment and supportive services to enable them to be self-sufficient.

Second Harvest Food Bank

Second Harvest Food Bank provides assistance for SNAP, FITAP, Kinship Care Subsidy Program, Child Support Access to community support counselors, and Food Pantry referrals.

Covenant House New Orleans

Covenant House is free always open to youth between 16-21 who need help. Their Crisis Center is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. A team of professionals develops individualized plans with and for each young person. Services include case management, health services, counseling, educational services, employment services, and bus tickets.

Loyola Center for Counseling and Education

Loyola Center for Counseling and education offers mental health counseling services to underserved families, couples, groups, and individuals. The center sees patients by appointment, who are aged two and older.

Grace House

Grace House offers gender-specific, long-term residential substance abuse treatment designed to meet the unique needs of women. Their program is designed to enhance a woman’s ability to maintain sobriety and enable her to live a productive, healthy lifestyle beneficial to herself, her family, and the community. 

St. Thomas Community Health Center

The St. Thomas Community Health Center provides adult and pediatric primary medical care, including PAP smears, STI and HIV testing, diabetic clinic, lab services and referrals. All forms of insurance (Medicaid, Medicare, etc.) are accepted. The center accepts uninsured patients on a sliding scale with a $20 minimum. Spanish is spoken for medical services.
